Picture of a commercial driver standing in front of his truck. If you have plans to be a commercial driver, you’ll likely need a Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card (also referred to as a “medical examiner’s certificate”). And before you can obtain that card, you’ll need to pass a DOT physical exam. Luckily, if you’re in Cleveland, Tennessee, or the surrounding area, you can get your DOT medical exam efficiently completed at Erlanger ExpressCare, a trusted urgent care provider that’s been treating patients since 2019.

What Is a DOT Physical?

Will this be your first time applying for a DOT medical card? If so, you might be unfamiliar with the process. Also known as “CDL physicals,” DOT physicals—which the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires on a biennial basis—are used to determine whether commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers are physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy enough to hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL).

To make this assessment, a certified medical examiner (CME) at our office will:

  • Ask you about your medical history
  • Record your vitals
  • Perform a thorough medical exam, paying close attention to your eyes, ears, mouth, throat, heart, lungs, spine, nervous system, extremities, and general appearance

If you pass your DOT exam, we’ll electronically report your results to the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (NRCME) and supply you with a copy of your DOT medical card.
