Is It a Cold or the Flu?

If you’re having a hard time distinguishing between a cold and the flu, you’re not alone. Both conditions can produce many of the same symptoms—including sneezing, coughing, and a sore throat— so it can be hard to tell them apart. Of course, only a trained medical provider can accurately diagnose what’s causing your symptoms, but asking yourself the following questions may provide you with a tentative answer:

  • How quickly did your symptoms start? Flu symptoms tend to appear more suddenly than cold symptoms.
  • Do you have a fever? While it’s common for the flu to cause a fever and chills, it’s rare for a cold to do so.
  • Are you experiencing aches and pains? Although colds sometimes cause a small amount of achiness, it’s much more likely for the flu to produce headaches and body aches. Plus, the achiness associated with the flu tends to be more severe.
