What Is Tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs. Depending on how far an infection has progressed and which part of the body it has affected, it may cause:

  • Coughing (sometimes with blood or mucus)
  • Chest pain (which may worsen when breathing or coughing)
  • Fever with chills
  • Night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • An overall feeling of being unwell (malaise)

Notably, when tuberculosis is in its latent (middle) stage, it doesn’t produce any symptoms. TB testing is important not only for your own health and well-being, but also for the safety of those around you—tuberculosis is contagious and can be spread through sneezing and coughing, so you’ll need to take precautionary measures if it turns out that you’re infected.
